Start planning as soon as you know the new address. Check broadband and number options before ending any existing services.
Six to eight weeks before the move
Check service availability at the exact new address and unit. Ask your provider what it can transfer, what requires a new order and whether the new premises needs installation work. Confirm lease access dates and permission for cabling, router placement or external equipment.
Protect your phone numbers
Make a list of geographic and non-geographic numbers, direct dial numbers and any published contact details. Ask the provider whether each number can be retained at the new address and whether it needs to be ported or hosted separately. Do not cancel the old service until the receiving provider confirms the number transfer is complete; number portability depends on technical and geographic conditions.
Agree a cutover plan
Choose a date that leaves time to test before customers rely on the new site. Confirm who will be on site, which circuits are live, how calls will route during the move, and what temporary message or call-forwarding arrangement is available. Ask for the plan in writing.
Check equipment and dependencies
Record routers, firewalls, Wi-Fi access points, phone handsets, alarms, payment terminals, lift lines and monitoring equipment. Confirm which can move, which need reconfiguration and which require a supplier visit. Keep serial numbers and administrator details available to the person doing the work.
The week of the move
Test broadband by cable and Wi-Fi, inbound and outbound calls, number presentation, call groups, voicemail, payment devices and any monitored equipment. Keep the old connection live until the new service and important functions have been checked, subject to contract and provider arrangements.
After the move
Update website listings, invoices, directories, emergency contacts and staff instructions. Keep a record of faults and installation references. Ofcom rules cover switching and number portability, but a business move can involve provider-specific processes; confirm the dates and responsibilities directly with each provider.
Make the move a planned change
A little overlap between old and new services can be cheaper than an unplanned period without connectivity. The Calls Warehouse can help map services and build a practical move checklist.
